Here are the most critical updates to waterfalls that were included within the 2nd edition of of book, New England Waterfalls: A Guide to 400 Cascades & Waterfalls. The 2nd edition of our book was published in 2010 and was based on visits we made to these waterfalls throughout 2009. Since this a few years ago, some things have changed at a few of the waterfalls in that book.
Not all changes that have occurred have been discovered by us already. Unfortunately, there are likely to be omissions to the list below due to the wide-spread damage caused by Hurrican Irene. The hurricane washed out many bridges and annihilated dozens of important dirt roads, mostly in Vermont and New Hampshire, Please let us know immediately if you are aware of any waterfalls we have in our book that have changed or are currently closed due to damage.

One reader emailed to
say that the hiking trail network has slightly changed, although we
cannot give the exact nature of the change at this point. Be prepared to
make your own decisions at any new trail junctions.

It turns out that the
AMC does NOT own the trails surrounding
Pitcher
Falls
.
The landowner emailed me in mid-July 2011 and let me know that only AMC
members are welcome on his property. The general public is NOT welcome to
swim at or view the falls. Please respect the landowners wishes and stay away from this one before all access is completely lost.

Swimming is not
allowed at the falls. In addition, the last remaining bridge across the
stream here was damaged during the winter of 2010/2011 and later removed.
As of 7/15/2011, there is no bridge across the river. However, the falls
can still be seen in full from near the parking area.

Little Wilson Falls

Access |
On 1-19-2012, we received an email from a website visitor stating that the road to Little Wilson Falls had been gated off and that a court battle over ownership of the road was in process. Until we receive any more updates, I'd avoid going to this waterfall! Although this does
not affect any of the waterfalls themselves, the bridge above the
uppermost falls on this trail (
Rocky
Glen
Falls
)
was damaged. Do not use this trail to visit
Lonesome
Lake
as it would be difficult or potentially dangerous to cross the river
without the bridge in place. Refer to the
White Mountain
National
Forest
website to see if the bridge has
been fixed: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/white/

We have heard rumors
that the dirt road to the trailhead was damaged by Hurricane Irene and
has a "washout". One reader reports that you will have to [park
and walk the final 0.25 mile to the trailhead. There is "plenty of
room to park and walk the last bit".

The falls were severly damaged by Hurricane Irene and the entire area is currently closed. Avoid this waterfall through at least the first half of 2012. It could take 1-2 or more years to fix this one. You may want to contact the USFS if you'd like to find out when the trail is expected to be re-opened: 1-802-747-6700 |
