THE FALLS:
In early spring, when the West Branch of the Penobscot River is in its flood stage, Abol Falls is a wide, massively powerful cascade. As the spring months pass, the volume of water released by Ripogenus Dam upstream begins to diminish. Abol Falls becomes more of a small set of rapids, either class II or III whitewater.
Swimming is dangerous here, so do not enter the river.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
There are no official paths leading down to the river, so very few visitors each year make their way down to the riverbank. There are limited views from the dirt road, as all have become at least partially obstructed by trees over the years.
DIRECTIONS:
From Banger, take I-95 north to exit 244. Take a left onto ME 157 west, traveling towards Millinocket. Continue traveling on ME 157 west into the center of the town of Millinocket. Just past where ME 157 ends in the town of Millinocket where ME 11 comes in from the south, take a right onto Millinocket Ave (sometimes called Katahdin Ave or Baxter Park Rd) while following signs towards Baxter State Park. As you approach Millinocket Lake on your right about 8.5 miles beyond that junction of ME 157 and ME 11, you will need to switch over to the road running parallel to the left of the road you are traveling on. There are several paved lanes to do this, so be on the lookout when you see a sign pointing left towards “Ambajejus Lake” The road you switched to is called the Golden Rd. Travel north on the Golden Rd as it eventually crosses the West Branch of the Penobscot River over the one-laned Abol Bridge. Continue for a hundred feet beyond the bridge and take a left onto an unmarked dirt road. Follow this dirt road for 0.8 mile and the falls can be seen off at a distance from the left side of the road near a house that has a direct view of the falls with Katahdin behind it. About 0.1 mile before this house, though, there are several rough paths to the river with good views of the falls.
