THE FALLS:
Managed by the Trustees of Reservation, Chapel Brook Reservation was a gift of Mrs. Henry T. Curtis, in memory of her husband who passed away in 1964. Within this reservation lies Chapel Falls; a set of three drops totaling 45 feet and Pony Mountain, a summit overlooking a nearby valley.
The first waterfall is a 10-foot tall medium-angle cascade. This section of falls is categorized as a fan because Chapel Brook expands from 8 feet to 15 feet as it travels down the falls. The next waterfall is slightly wider, and travels at a lower angle than the first set of falls. The entire formation is more a slide than cascade, as the waters maintain close contact with the rock as it descends further downstream.
The final set of falls at the Chapel Brook Reservation drops a total of 20 feet in a block-style formation. This block waterfall ends as a 5-foot tall slide. For the hearty explorer, smaller pools and cascades can be found downstream. The pools are inviting in summer when the brook is flowing more gently and the warm weather invites a cool dip in the brook.
Also located at Chapel Brook Reservation is Chapel Ledge, a sheer 100-foot granite cliff of Pony Mountain accessible only to skilled rock climbers, or to those interested in watching the experts master their abilities.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
The trail begins on the other side of the road after crossing the bridge. It is about a hundred feet further up the road from the parking lot. The trail is marked by a sign and you should be able to hear the falls from the parking lot. Continue down the trail 0.2 mile to the lowermost falls.
