THE FALLS:

Dixville Notch State Park has two waterfall picnic areas. One falls, Huntington Cascades, is located near the southern tip of the park and is described in this guide in a separate chapter. The other, Dixville Flume, is a set of three drops in a narrow flume, whose maximum thickness is 12 feet. The total drop of the three drops is about 18 feet, a considerably smaller total drop than its neighbor to the south. Because the vertical walls allow for little sunlight to reach the pools, they flume can have somewhat of a dreary appearance. Perhaps the lack of sunshine is the reason why this area always seems to be bug-infested when we have visited, even when other trails in the area are flying-insect free. Do not skip this one though; it makes for a nice quick rest stop—just remember to bring some bug-spray.

TRAIL INFORMATION:

Although the flume is very close to the parking area, it cannot be seen from there. To view the falls, walk past the sign at the parking lot that explains the geology of Dixville Notch a short distance to the flume, which will be on your left. During periods of low water, the scope of exploring within the flume is increased.
