THE FALLS:
Not expecting much while navigating the confusing network of trails to find this waterfall, we were greatly surprised as Giant Falls opened up before us. This waterfall has a potential to have many different personalities. During our visit in late summer, the absence of strong waters created a picturesque drizzle of water kissing the rock face as it dropped in a fan-like formation. The sheer height of the rock wall in front of you makes this waterfall worthy of multiple visits. During snowmelt in early spring, water must come crashing down the vast rock walls with tremendous force. This waterfall is a definite must see and on our personal top 20 list!
TRAIL INFORMATION:
Cross the street to begin the Peabody Brook Trail, which starts off as a grassy logging road. You must first pass a gate which prevents vehicles from driving up this road. A few hundred feet later, the trail forks right, identifiable by a small cairn. From here, continue hiking as the trail crosses over an old logging bridge and soon you will have to fork left to continue on this blue-blazed trail. From this point further you will not cross the brook again. The trail continues relatively flat with overgrown grass in some areas. At a point about 0.8 mile from the road, the trail will fork left into the woods and become more of a recognizable hiking trail. From this point, hike another 0.4 mile to a small unmarked trail which spurs downhill on your left. This unmarked trail is identifiable by turning around and spotting a trail sign for the “Peabody Brook Trail”. Instead of continuing on the Peabody Brook Trail, take this spur trail for 0.3 mile as it leads downhill to the riverbed and then begins climbing upstream to the falls. Only a portion of the true size of the falls is viewable from the trail.
