THE FALLS:
Glendale Falls earns our recommended rating through its sheer size and volume. The drop, which is over 160 feet, is Massachusetts third tallest cascade chain. The waters of Glendale Brook crash thunderously and haphazardly over endless ledges and boulders strewn in the book over this long drop. At the base of the falls is a deep pool with some swimming appeal. However, the current is rarely gentle enough to safely allow this. This is not really the best place for children, as it takes a certain level of skill to scrambling techniques to access this pool.
The Trustees of Reservation, which manages the 60 acre preserve at Glendale Falls, have placed a sign at the parking lot outlining other interesting natural attractions in the area. Parking at this particular property is free, and the reserve is open year-round, sunrise to sunset.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
Although there are limited views of the falls from the top of them, many visitors will probably choose to scramble down the side of the falls for additional views. If you do scramble down, be aware that this is steep and slippery terrain, with no formal paths guiding you along the way. There are places that will require you to use your hands to scramble over wet sections of roots and rocks. Please take caution if you decide to do this.
