THE FALLS:
Pauchaug Brook Falls consists of an upper 5-foot tall, 15-foot wide cascade and a lower 10-foot segmented waterfall. The upper falls are located only 50 feet away from the lower falls. The general area is not really scenic, but it is close to the road and somewhat photogenic. The best time to visit is in early spring before the ferns and weeds here obscure much of the views from the road.
Pauchaug Brook splits into two main routes for the lower falls, the first being a plunge, and the second a cascade. Surprisingly, immediately after the waterfall the river then turns into a relatively lazy river. Further downstream, Pauchaug Brook is a popular canoe route.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
There is no optimal viewpoint of these falls. For most of the year, the only views are from either of the two highways. In addition, there are no cleared paths down to the top or base of the falls. In early spring, however, there is often a view of the falls from a pull-off that is right between the junction of MA 63 and MA 10. By May, or perhaps June, this view is obscured by heavy shrub growth along the river.
DIRECTIONS:
From the junction of MA 63 and MA 2 in Erving, take MA 63 north. Travel on MA 63 north for about 10 miles to the northern junction of MA 63 and MA 10, just before the NH state line. To get to Erving, take MA 2 west from Fitchburg or MA 2 east from North Adams.
