THE FALLS:
The Boston-based Appalachian Mountain Club continues to purchase large tracts of land in the Northeast as part of their mission to promote “the protection, enjoyment and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region.” The Noble View Outdoor Center of Massachusetts is one of their more recent acquisitions. Due to the purchase of this property, several falls along Pitcher Brook can now be visited by the general public.
You will find three sets of falls over the course of a tenth of a mile. The name Pitcher Falls was most likely derived by the 12-foot middle falls, as the water is poured down through a very narrow punchbowl into an enticing pool below. The upper falls, sometimes called Little Pitcher Falls, features a small but pretty 5-foot plunge into a gorgeous olive-green pool. The lowest falls is a less impressive set of cascades seen only partially through the woods. Swimming at the upper and middle falls is excellent, especially at the middle falls.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
From the parking area, continue uphill on a gravel road for about 400 feet and take a right onto the yellow-blazed Border Trail at a sign that says “Pitcher Brook 0.4 mile.” Follow this trail for 0.4 mile and you will reach a junction with three separate trails marked in red, blue, and yellow. You will want to take a right onto the red-blazed trail. This trail will climb down at a moderate pace for 0.3 mile, at which time you will begin paralleling the river. Once you see the river, the first set of falls will be just ahead.
To get to Pitcher Falls, which is the second set of falls of this trip, continue downstream on the trail, staying very close to the river, for about 300 feet. The trail will place you at the top of the falls. From this point on, the trail gets steeper and rougher, especially if you wish to scramble down to the base of the Pitcher Falls. There is also another set of cascades about 100 feet further downstream as well, but they are less impressive and more obstructed than what you have seen thus far.
