THE FALLS:
Tannery Falls and the various other waterfalls and cascades in the general vicinity make up what we would like to call a section of waterfall country. Within a square mile, almost a dozen waterfalls, several worthy of their own pages in this guide, lie on the trail network at Tannery Falls. The main attraction, officially known as Tannery Falls, is an 80-foot series of tall plunges and curving horsetails. The upper 35-feet of this falls are a thundering curtain of whitewater, always impressive, even with little water flow. The bottom half of the falls is a series of narrowing horsetails that end in a shallow pool.
The second largest falls, Parker Brook Falls, lies only feet from Tannery Falls. It can be seen from the main trail as you walk back up the trail but you have to look carefully. This multi-section plunge waterfall falls down through an angular gorge. The water remains only 4 feet to 5 feet in width throughout the long formation. There is also a small set of cascades that is inches from the parking lot, accessible by bushwhacking on a primitive path to the left of the main trail.
Altogether, Tannery Falls, Parker Brook Falls, and the nearly dozen other unnamed plunges and cascades that adorn Ross Brook and Parker Brook, offer one of the top “off the beaten path” treasures in the region. Try to budget several hours when you plan a trip to this special place.
TRAIL INFORMATION:
From the parking lot, head straight down the wide trail that is marked with blue blazes. This trail will bring you to the bottom of the largest waterfall, passing many small waterfalls along the way. After about 8 to 10 minutes, wooden stairs will lead you to metal wire fencing and a view from the top of the falls. Continue right and follow the trail to the bottom of the falls for a much different view. About 100 feet before you reach the bottom of the falls, take a right and walk off the main trail for about 50 feet and you will see 60-foot tall Parker Brook Falls, first viewed as you come around a corner.
There is a small narrow trail to the left side of the parking lot that leads to another small waterfall, only a hundred feet or so down the trail. This is the waterfall you can hear from the parking lot. Although smaller in size than the main attractions here, this minor addition, along with the other cascades and small plunges on the trail to the main falls, can add much to the enjoyment factor of your visit.
